The New York Mets made an interesting move on Thursday, signing a left-handed pitcher out of retirement on a two-year minor league deal.
Much of the attention is rightfully focused on Wandy Asigen, but the Mets also shelled out another $1.3725 million for an outfielder who has been compared to Twins legend Kirby Puckett. It's Cleiner Ramirez, who is expected to fill out his 5-foot-9 frame in a sturdy way. Currently, he's 17 years old, so he's got time.
The New York Mets know that adding another reliable arm this offseason is crucial after a year in which starting pitching proved to be a major weakness. However, on Wednesday, they lost one of their top targets in Ranger Suárez.
The New York Mets could use help in the outfield, and there are still some star players available in free agency.
The Athletic's Will Sammon has reported the news as a two-year signing for the left-handed pitcher Trey McGough. McGough abruptly announced his retirement from professional baseball in May 2025 after allowing 15 earned runs across 15 innings with 15 walks at Triple-A Charlotte to begin the campaign.
Following Ranger Suarez's signing with the Boston Red Sox, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com tabbed the Mets as one of two suitors for free-agent ex- Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez.
